Four Hundred and Fifty Feet of Sand at the End of a Lane

Harborview Drive leaves the Overseas Highway in Tavernier and runs down towards the water through a residential pocket of the southern tip of Key Largo. At the end of it the road stops and the Coconut Palm Inn begins: a low run of buildings, a garden that has been worked on for years, and then the beach. Four hundred and fifty feet of it, private, facing west across Florida Bay. That is a serious frontage anywhere in the Keys, where most waterfront is seawall and dock, and it is the single fact that decides what a stay here feels like.

Why It Works

We kept this address for the combination of real sand and small scale. Nineteen rooms is inn size, not resort size, so the beach never feels shared out. Every room opens onto its own deck, which turns the outdoors into private space rather than a common area. The heated pool, the kayaks, the paddleboards and the bicycles are all included, so a day here does not require booking anything. And unlike much of the good waterfront in the Upper Keys, this one takes children, which makes it a genuine option for a family week rather than a couples-only retreat.

Why This Location

Tavernier is the southern end of Key Largo, the quiet stretch of the Upper Keys between the dive shops of Key Largo proper and the charter fleet of Islamorada. Being off the highway rather than on it matters here: the property sits at the bottom of a residential lane, so the traffic noise that follows US-1 down the island chain does not reach it. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the reef trips are a drive north, the Islamorada docks and restaurants a drive south, and Key West roughly two hours further on. The bay side means sunsets from the beach rather than from the car.

Rooms That Open Onto Their Own Deck

The nineteen rooms and suites are spread low across the grounds rather than stacked, and each one has a private deck. That is the design decision that shapes the property: coffee outside in the morning, a book outside in the afternoon, and the garden or the bay in front of you rather than a corridor. The outlooks differ, over the planting, over the sand or straight out to the water, and they are worth asking about at booking. The scale is intimate throughout, and the grounds have been planted and maintained to a standard that has drawn awards, including a place on Travel and Leisure list of secret hideaways.

The Beach, the Pool and the Firepit

The beach is the reason to come and the pool is the reason to stay when the wind gets up; it is heated, which extends the season at both ends. Kayaks and paddleboards are there for the taking, and Florida Bay off this shore is shallow and protected enough to use them without experience. Bicycles come with the stay too, which is the right way to see Tavernier. After dark the firepit is lit on the sand and s mores appear, a small nightly ritual that does more for the atmosphere of the place than a longer amenity list would.
