Banana Bay Resort & Marina
What we like about this address is the ten acres it sits on. Banana Bay...
The white tower at the entrance is not decoration. Faro Blanco has marked this bend of bayside Marathon since the middle of the last century, when the marina below it was where the charter fleet tied up and most of the island was still mangrove and fishing shacks. The resort that grew around the lighthouse kept both of them, the tower and the working slips, which is why the place still reads as a marina with rooms rather than a hotel with a view. Arrive in the late afternoon and the order of things tells you everything: boats first, then the water, then the low pale buildings set back behind the palms.
We keep coming back to the geography. Marathon is the hinge of the archipelago, and this property holds the Gulf side of it with a full service marina at the door and four pools laid between the rooms and the channel. Most Keys addresses give you one or the other. The Courtyard flag supplies what a long stay needs, 118 rooms and suites, three places to eat, a fitness room and a front desk used to guests who arrive by boat as often as by car, while the lighthouse and the slips supply the character a highway hotel never has.
The address is 2146 Overseas Highway, at the bayside edge of Marathon rather than on the ocean shoulder of it, which matters at sunset and matters again when the wind turns. Everything that makes the Middle Keys worth a week sits a few minutes up the highway: the Turtle Hospital, the Dolphin Research Center on Grassy Key, the hardwood trails and shell mounds of Crane Point Hammock. Old Seven Mile Bridge begins just south, walkable again, and Key West is a comfortable day trip rather than a commute. Marathon also has the airport and the supermarkets, so a week here needs no logistics.

The accommodation is generous rather than precious, which suits the setting. Layouts run from standard kings and doubles to suites with a separate sitting area, and the corner suites are the ones worth asking for, with windows on two sides and the marina traffic passing below. Interiors stay in the coastal register, pale woods, blues and whites, no clutter. Balconies and terraces are the real amenity here: this is a property people use from the outside in.
Blue Waters Bar and Grill is the heart of it, poolside and open to the marina, built around fresh seafood, tropical drinks and the kind of American plates that follow a day on a boat. The Bistro handles the early hours, coffee and breakfast for people leaving at first light, and room service runs from the same kitchen for the nights when nobody wants to move. Add the fire pits on the beach after dinner and the resort covers a full day without asking anyone to get back in the car.
The slips are the reason to choose this address over another. Overnight berths and day visits both work, so a boat can follow you down the Overseas Highway or be chartered on the spot, and the reef, the flats and the backcountry all open from the same basin. A resort that can hold your boat and your family in the same place is worth more here than any list of amenities.
