A Walled Garden on the Quiet Side of Truman Avenue

Old Town Key West is small enough to cross on foot and dense enough that the choice of street decides the character of a stay. Truman Avenue runs parallel to the action rather than through it, and Almond Tree Inn sits behind a gate on its shaded side. Inside, the building gives way to a courtyard: a heated pool, a whirlpool set into the deck, palms and almond trees closing the sky overhead, loungers where guests read through the flat middle of the afternoon. The island is two blocks away. From a chair by the pool you would not know it.

Why It Works

We were drawn to the balance this inn strikes between position and calm. It is adults only, which sets the register of the courtyard from breakfast to nightfall. It is small, twenty-two rooms and suites rather than a resort floor plan, so the pool never becomes a queue. And it is walkable to everything a first visit to Key West is built around, which means the car stays parked and the evening ends on foot. Breakfast outdoors and an afternoon happy hour give the day two fixed points without turning the place into a schedule.

Why This Location

Truman Avenue is the practical spine of Old Town: US-1 arrives on it, and the historic district opens off it in both directions. The Hemingway House and the Key West Lighthouse are a four-minute walk, which puts the two most visited addresses on the island within a block or two of breakfast. Duval Street, its bars and its galleries are a short walk north; the Southernmost Point, the cemetery and the quieter residential lanes of the Meadows are a short walk the other way. Mallory Square and the sunset boats are a fifteen-minute stroll through town rather than a drive. Staying here means arriving once and walking after that.

Rooms Built Around Privacy

The room types differ more than the count suggests. King suites and two-queen suites open onto private patios or porches, which is the detail that matters in a town where the good hours are outdoors and the courtyard is shared. The junior spa king suite goes further, with a standalone tub and a large shower. Rooms carry the practical kit for a long stay in the heat, refrigerator and microwave included, so a cold drink and a late snack do not require another walk into town. Nothing here is oversized; the scale is that of an inn, and the plan is arranged so two people can keep to themselves.

What to Know Before You Book

This is an adults-only house, so it is not the address for a family week. Check-in opens at four in the afternoon and runs to ten at night, which is generous for late flights into Key West or a long drive down the Overseas Highway; check-out is at eleven. Parking is on site, a real consideration in Old Town, where street space is scarce and most visitors end up walking anyway. Come for the courtyard and the position, and treat the reef trips, the sunset sails and the drive back up the Keys as the day out.
